Anne McCaffrey described the authors as 'scary good'...and they are! This is the first book in the Liaden series that I ever read. I'm not sure that it should have been technically...but it suited me well and while the story fits into a larger universe, it also works vert well as a stand alone. It introduces both the Master Trader, Shan yos Galen, a starship captain and a Healer (or Empath) and the character of Pricilla Mendoza. Though he is half human he is a prominent member of a Liaden Clan known as Korval, She has an interesting background as a 'Witch of Scintia' a magic adept exiled from her home world. At the beginning of the book she is marooned on a planet functionally the equivalent of a 'one horse town' by another starship captain. She is penniless and friendless. Fortunately she is able to apply for a post with the Korval flagship captained by Shan yos Galen and does so just to get off-world. The story follows her as she seeks and finds a place in Shan yos Galen's ship and the Liaden culture. A thoroughly enjoyable read which (I find) gets even better when re read and more details and nuances emerge.!
I should say that I love all the Liaden Universe books written by Sharon Lee and her husband Steve Miller and haven't read one I didn't enjoy. (In fact I read and re read them) So, if you haven't experienced the authors' world building skills this is a good place to start...and if you have, you MUST read Conflict of Honors as Shan and Pricilla are important characters in the Korval Saga.

Several years ago, one of my brothers recommended this to me. I enjoyed it because of the hints of technical complexity, the accounts of trading, the worldbuilding, the hin ts of magic, and the romance. I found them a delightful combination.
Nut I am deeply confused about how the Liaden books are numbered. What a universe. And coming to it now, there is so much of it to read!
I love the Liaden universe! A wonderful, space opera world, with enjoyable characters and an intricate society. Very sad to be almost finished with the available stories. Looking forward to the next, due in May 2017.
One of my favorites in the Liaden series. I might rate it higher if the publication were better produced (it could use a bit of editing and proofreading), though I rarely give five stars in any case. Good on its own if you're not interested in getting involved with the series.
I am a great fan of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. After accidentally stumbling across their novel Fledgling , I've read every novel, short story and splinter(short stories on Splinter Universe) they have written.
The Laiden universe series is compelling reading, hard to put down occasionally interrupting
my responsibilities.
There is a reccomended reading order list on the Laiden Universe website. A good idea
to follow it but not manditory. Also, I think short stories are better read after the novels since many of them contain the characters we've come to admire and embellish events we've
previously read about
Reminds me of early Heinlein (Citizen of the Galaxy) with hints of Andre Norton and a smidge of C.J. Cherryh alien culture building. High adventure with a touch of humour and lovable characters. This is the fifth of the Liaden universe books I have read and do plan to read more.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable space opera novel set in the authors' Liaden Universe. There are very likable characters, an engaging plot, a romance element that added to my pleasure in the book (which is by no means always the case). More than that, the likable characters repeatedly help and support each other. I think it is because of this last fact that this book made me happy as I read it, a trait it shares with such otherwise very different series as "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall Smith, or Gwynedd Rae's children's books about Mary Plain. While the backdrop is rather standard--humanoids gallivanting around the galaxy in FTL-spaceships--I found the story set against that backdrop a delight.
