I bought the first book of the series while on a cruise to Alaska. I like sampling local writers' work. I thought the topic uniquely Alaskan, which is what I was looking for. A female author writing about a female character of native descent was also appealing to me. I think the character has already grown old to me by Book #4. The flawed detective that's really good at their job and nothing else is a standard character in crime fiction. Kate is also, by the very nature of her birth, a spokesperson for her "people" and actually too self-sufficient to be a classic detective. She doesn't need the help of her elders, although respectful of them, or the love of her man, who constantly sends her into harm's way without backup. She has no addition accept grease and sugar based food, which apparently has no negative consequences on her stock but trim little body. I keep looking for a character in the book that I can really relate to and haven't found one. I want too many things from this character. I want her man to show true concern for the woman he loves. I want Kate to struggle with her weight and to be quick with the "come-bask" lines. I want the side characters to be interesting enough to have their own series of books (these characters are a serious part of the Lead Character's family and major arsenal). So the plots are fine, the settings authentic but the characters need to be more sympathetic and relate more with the average "Joe", like me, with more humor and depth. This applies to Kate the most. I'll give the series a rest for several months or a year then read Book #5 and see if I remember anyone I truly like.Tags : A Cold-Blooded Business (Kate Shugak Mystery) [Dana Stabenow] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have read all the earlier books in the series. I have enjoyed learning about life in Alaska, the native experience of her protagonist, commercial fishing, etc. I doubt there is another series that would open the door better to life in Alaska and do so by couching it in a series of entertaining mysteries. It has been fun to watch Ms Stabenow grow as a writer. Her work is maturing and I continue in the series because her characters are rich in texture and engaging.
That said, this was not one of my favorites. The story line was weak and I felt the attacks on "Christians", all of who were grouped together, constituted a cheap shot. While I am not a fundamentalist or a proponent of any approach that is disrespectul to the position of others ( I do not believe it works), I felt Ms Stabenow, who typically takes the time and patience to develop characters beyond the cardboard or "prop" stage, completely failed to do so in this book and can reasonably be accused of the same biasis; albeit in reverse. It is wrong to see people as members of a group, culture, color, position or status rather than as individuals with all their strengths and weaknesses. Given the characters about which she writes so well, I am surprised and disappointed that Ms Stabenow would weaken her book by stooping to stereotyping.
A COLD-BLOODED BUSINESS by Dana Stabenow may be the weakest story in the Kate Shugak series. The discovery of oil brought more people to Alaska than the Gold Rush, but the crooks must vie with the homesteaders to make a life in the frozen north. As always Ms. Stabenow provides the exact details to open the doors for the reader to the promise land. With A COLD-BLOODED BUSINESS, those details have intruded on the story telling.
Drugs and stolen native grave tokens vie for the front seat in a land where there is no margin for error. It is a little plodding, but still a good read for Kate's fans.

Once you read one of these books in the Kate Shugak series, you just have to stop and buy the first book to read them
all in sequence. It's like living in Alaska right along side of her. What a great series. If i comment on one book, I have commented on all the books in the Kate Shugak series. You cannot find a better read, and the author did an excellent job of writing these books. The history of Alaska through Kate Shugak's eyes is so amazing and forthwith. Just love them. I truly recommend you start from the first book and you can take it from there.
