Broken The Divine Series Book 3 eBook MR Forbes
Broken (The Divine, Book Three)I am a staunch supporter of MR Forbes's Divine series, having loved both Balance and Betrayal, and while I really do want to give this book 4 stars, I can, in all honesty, only give it 3.
In this instalment, Landon and team are losing - constantly and badly. All the time! And again - and again. I desperately wanted to see his surrounding life given some depth, to see his love interest develop into something more than a glance, to see him make inroads against the Beast that culminate into something more than another desperate, losing battle. I wanted to see Hope but all I got was exhausted and depressed.
On the plus side, Mr Forbes continues to WOW with his originality and unique take on a familiar genre. The story is fast paced and the relationship with both his 'soul-mates' was sometimes humorous and heart-warming.
And then, at the end, while I can't say the last battle was any different from the first one in the book, there is the surprising twist which I thoroughly enjoyed! It was a moment of solidarity, of clarity and yes, hope! I did puzzle over the myriad of little clues sprinkled throughout the book but I didn't piece them all together until the end - now that's good writing! Also, I understand there is a 4th book planned and with that in mind, I knew that whatever happened at the end, would be continued. So for me it wasn't a cliff-hanger but more a teaser of what was to come!
And here's hoping that Book 4 offers all the above, and more!

Broken The Divine Series Book 3 eBook MR Forbes Reviews
This is fantasy of good versus evil, demons, angels lots of action, good use of thought process and makes you wish to read the next book in the series
I have really enjoyed this series so far - I would rate the first two combined as about a 4 plus (not quite 4 and a half). This final installment to the "beast" trilogy was flawed in that it was like a constant ending from the beginning; it had everything from continual showdowns with "boss" level enemies, constant impossible odds scenarios, huge desperate no win battle scenarios, big twists, constant beloved character loss. These are things that are built up to over the course of an entire book and become a dramatic crescendo during the last 1/3 or so. You just can't keep getting bigger when all of the universe is at play; it plateaued and became tedious. I've tried to remember if I've ever read anything like this, not just one big long climax, but a series of one big long climaxes. I haven't.
If you have read the rest of the series you'll read this in order to find out what happens, I would imagine like me, you'll hope the author takes this back to the semi mundane aspect of a guy with the job to keep divine balance. Not one who has the fate of the universe at stake in every decision.
I started with Forbes' Science Fiction series' and they were extremely well crafted. The Science Fantasy genre in this series reaches an even better level of fascination for creativity, because he combines the best features of both genres with his proven literary strengths from Sci Fi writing. Even though I am an fan, I must confess I have been trying to avoid signing up for the "All you can read" for a low monthly price. But its authors like M.R. Forbes who keep cranking out excellent products quick enough that I keep finding myself spending more each month than I expected.
I have to say this was, for me, a depressing read. I have the impression from the end of the book that there may be a 4th book in the series, though how it can come back from such an ending I don't know. I've mixed feeling about this series now. I really enjoyed the first two books but this seemed more a of a slog to get through as each "big bad" got worse. There was no down time from the endless fights. I'll probably read book 4 if it comes out but I don't feel any real desire to read this installment in the series again. If this this is the final book in the series then I have to say this is a very unfulfilling ending.
Broken took me to every place in the world as a passenger in a tale of doom. The book kept me on my toes and every time you expected something the contrary happen. Not only are you a part of the story because you become so engulfed but you want to be part of the adventure. A must read which will make you gasp and tear and sigh at different times. Follow Landon and his allies in the quest to save the world and prevent the holiest war that could destroy everything we know.
Angels, demons, vampires, werewolves and all manner of supernatural beings, populate this series about an evil being taking over the Universe. And while that is nothing specifically new in this genre, there are some twists in the mechanics. Think very much the TV show Supernatural, mix in Grimm and that's pretty much what this series feels like. I never give spoilers but if you persevere after the first in the series, you will not be disappointed.
Overall, The Divine is a decent (stress on decent) series. The writing flows well, the story develops well, and the author can keep your interest.
However, the protagonist - Landon - is truly a stupid, stupid individual. I mean he lacks even the intelligence of a normal human being. I understand authors must have their characters do things that are dumb, wrong, misinformed, etc, in order for the story to develop; but, Forbes has Landon doing dumb, stupid, things left and right. The character never uses logic worth a damn, can't reason his way into a course of action, and prefers to stumble along just re-acting rather than acting.
I finished the three books so far published. The manner in which the character's continually stumble from one scene to the next is very off-putting though. These three books don't really make me want to continue this series, or get his other books. Overall, I was able to burn time enough to justify the costs of the books, but I wish I'd just read these as a loaner from a friend or the library and spent the money on something else.
