Becky Lower has done it again. As a matter of fact, she has out-done herself with this newest entry into the Fitzpatrick family saga (otherwise known as The Cotillion Ball Series). Rosemary is my favorite member of this delightful, unconventional family. She is leading a double life - dime novel writer by day and debutante by night. In fact, the precocious Rosemary has been authoring melodramatic western tales since the tender age of fourteen. By using an ambiguous pseudonym, Rosemary has hidden her sex from her publisher and her readers. All is going well in her world until her publishing house is sold and the new owner's son demands to meet his authors. Hijinks ensue. First Rosemary tries to have her father or brother impersonate F.P. Elliott. When that idea falls flat on it's face, she passes herself off as the reclusive author's secretary/niece. Her masquerade is threatened by the suspicious and delicious Henry Cooper. I absolutely love Rosemary. She is fiercely loyal to the characters in her dime novel and feels that she is fighting for their lives as she strives to hide her big secret from Henry. One of my favorite traits was her Walter Mitty moments. A chance comment will send her mind off into flights of fancy. All the world is material for her dime novels. Her friends and family have learned to recognize when Rosemary has stopped listening to them and is only listening to her muse. I was so pleased that she found a gentleman worthy to share her life. It takes an extraordinary man to appreciate the extraordinary Miss Rosemary Fitzpatrick. Henry Cooper more than fills the bill.Tags : The Duplicitous Debutante (Cotillion Ball Saga) [Becky Lower] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Duplicitous Debutante Cotillion Ball Saga Becky Lower 9781440578946 Books Reviews
I enjoyed reading the story except for the sexual descriptions. I think the story would have been just as good without them and leaving it to the imagination. I appreciated that her new beau did respect women in the workplace as well as in the home. I liked that the father was also supportive in that day. Overall it was well written and a good story line. I enjoy Historicals so I will look for another book by this author. But if it is as sensual as this one, it will be the last.
How refreshing to discover a historical romance series featuring the American aristocracy. Rather than Regency London, this novel is set in pre-Civil War New York City, which warred with Boston for the quality and quantity of Yankee blue bloods. The eccentric Fitzpatrick family rather reminds me of Julia’s Quinn’s Bridgertons--and you know it’s impossible to read just one of their stories.
The heroine of The Duplicitous Debutante, Rosemary Fitzpatrick, authors dime novels under a pen name that would imply she is a he. When her new publisher, Henry Cooper, insists on meeting the “reclusive” author in person, it sets up a potential disaster and a good reason for Rosemary to fear being terminated. She comes up with an ingenious ruse, but Henry is nobody’s fool. Her continued attempts to deceive him compound the problem, especially when she finds she’s irresistibly attracted to her new boss. It’s fun to watch them parry and to guess what each will do next. There was a point when I was yelling at Rosemary to just confess and be done with it. She didn't listen to me.
The dialog, particularly between the main characters, is engaging and witty. In addition, the author weaves fencing terminology throughout the hero’s point of view, while Rosemary’s story cleverly parallels the dime novel she’s writing. This gives the reader a sense of the characters’ personalities and quirks, and makes their love story all the more enjoyable.
Becky Lower has a wonderful voice for historical romance and layers in just enough historical detail to create the sense of being a part of the Fitzpatrick's world, not merely showing up as an observer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series.
If a clever, witty, and entertaining read is what you're looking for, The Duplicitous Debutante definitely fits the bill! The plot is creative and unique, the book is set in 1859. The heroine is a writer that writes under a pen name, a name that could easily be taken to mean that it's written by a male author. Everything has went along fine with her books until the new publisher comes in.
I really enjoyed this light read, it's a refreshing take at historical romance, and it makes me eager to try out the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong, though, I had no problems at all reading this book as a standalone. The author has written it to be a complete book by itself, the others don't seem to be needed to enjoy this romance. The Duplicitous Debutante stands as a five-star read all by itself, with no assistance needed!
The 6th book in the Cotillion Ball Series by Becky Lower is a treat. Ever since I found out in an earlier book that younger sister Rosemary was writing dime novels, I have been anticipating her story.
I loved the heroine AND hero in this story. Rosemary Fitzpatrick is secretly writing dime novels under a male pseudonym since at that time in history (1859), women were not supposed to be able to write about stories of the Wild West. She is headstrong and heart strong and can take care of herself. But when her publisher sells his business to a new family, they request a meeting with the ‘author’ F.P. Elliott. How is she going to explain that she is F.P. Elliott?
Henry Cooper is an endearing hero. Never quite living up to his father’s expectations, he sees his chance to change things when he is tasked with running the new publishing business in New York. And when he meets Rosemary, sparks fly, even though he knows that she is hiding something from him.
This interplay between the two main characters is wonderful. Henry is a fencer and he approaches his relationships with his father and Rosemary as he would one of his matches. The smattering of fencing terms throughout the book is a creative way to pull the reader into the relationships. But one of the best parts of the novel is the dime novel that interweaves throughout the book as well! Rosemary’s dime novel hero, Harry Hawk, is showcased in his own story which plays out alongside Rosemary’s.
This is a GREAT addition to this series!
