Human Error A Novella of the Lupi edition by Eileen Wilks Paranormal Romance eBooks
Originally released in 2011 in the anthology, Tied With a Bow, this story takes place after Death Magic. Benedict is somewhat nervous about meeting Arjenie’s entire extended family, not knowing if he’ll be accepted. But they are going for the Yule celebration and it’s important to her. There is a mystery involving black magic that starts off fairly quickly and Benedict and Arjenie both get involved. Arjenie’s family gets to see a different side of her.
I’ve got to say first off that I’ve enjoyed all of the novellas in this series, but this is the one I’ve reread the most. Love the fact that you can now get these without the anthologies. Got to love Arjenie’s family and their dynamics, as well as how each of them initially responds to who and what Benedict is.
But this one will pull on your heart strings and will leave you feeling good. And one character we meet? I hope he shows up in a future book.
This is not a good place to start the series, but if you are reading the series, you really need to have at least gotten as far as Blood Challenged to really appreciate this story.

Human Error A Novella of the Lupi edition by Eileen Wilks Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
There are the usual lupi culture plot points; with the addition of wicca, NA spiritualism and shape shifters. I missed the book before this one so I didn't know the couple that well. But her family are all gifted in some way. The meddling by undertrained young relatives kick off a crises. But there is a HUGE big bad and nothing comes of it. They chase the big bad don't catch it and the book is over and all is well.
Enjoyable short story/novella. Nice expansion to two characters who are not at the center of the main novel, Arjenie and Benedict. The author does a good job on the quick portrayal of the other personalities of Arjenie's family and keeping Arjenie and Benedict true to prior portrayals. There are some good moments that resonate with anyone who has visited their family as an adult and run up against assumptions that conflict with who they are as an adult.
Eileen Wilks has developed an interesting world, and peopled it with fascinating characters. I like her use of the novellas to deal with supporting characters from her novels. The relationship between Benedict and Arjenie seems unlikely, but it works. Meeting the in-laws for the first time is always nerve wracking, and it's interesting to see Benedict having to cope with totally unfamiliar family dynamics. I really enjoy the Lupi books, and spotlighting different aspects of that world keeps the series from becoming stale.
I chose this rating because I found this novella riveting from start to finish. I really enjoyed how Benedict was so nervous about meeting her family and her obvious excitement about seeing her very Wiccan family and enjoying their traditions. Of course, nothing goes to plan from the start, but with a little help from a "Navajo deity" and her Wiccan family things get resolved and everyone gets to experience a happy Yule and Christmas. There was nothing that I didn't love about this story. It was a typical Eileen Wilkes story within this universe. And if you love this series then you will thoroughly enjoy this glimpse into B&A's life.
This is one of the best spin off stories ever. Arjeanie and Benedict are two of my favorite characters in the Lipo series and to have her family come to like and appreciate Benedict not only as her husband but as a family member makes this story rock. To add in Native American folklore and Spirit Gods makes it even vetter. A must read for Eileen Wilks fans!
This novella is a terrific slice of Eileen Wilks' World of the Lupi. Benedict and Arjenie were such an unlikely pairing- she so slight and he so burly, that seeing how they have come so quickly to an understanding of each other, makes this a fun, fast read. Wilks has a deft hand at romantic suspense with flashes of humor. This skill is clearly shown in this offering, where length constraints demand rapid development of the risk and the cost. I really enjoy this series, and this was a nice addition to the canon.
I didn't review this before? Oops! Anyway, reviewing after a holiday re-read...
4.5 stars. Meet-the-parents goes wrong, and right.
Ultimate warrior Benedict is charmingly uncertain about finding acceptance with Arjenie's Wiccan clan during this Yule-time first visit, especially since mate bond limits mean she'll have to live far from them, and clan secrets can't be shared to explain why. A misguided spell pulls him into the Change when they've barely arrived, spoiling his intentions, then puzzles multiply with an unexpected Native Power's presence, and a local killed in a way that somehow involves both a bear and death magic.
Identifying and stopping the evil at work drives the action, but emotions and personal interactions are the story's heart. Arjenie finds herself having to fight for acceptance as an adult who knows what she's doing, despite loving her whole, large, well-intentioned family. Overreactions and doubts spring from ignorance of true Lupi nature and, in the mystery aspects, ignorance of what other forms of magic are more than just stories.
Aunt Robin (Arjenie's adoptive mother, de facto leader of the family and land-tied High Priestess) must get past her own soul-deep Wiccan assumptions about spiritual practices. The sheriff (who also still tends to think of Arjenie as the injured child he helped in the car crash where she lost her mother and permanently damaged her leg) butts heads over Benedict's independence from his authority. Arjenie's suspicious-of-Benedict teenage twin cousins have their own secret (with consequences which suggest a possible later appearance by Sam and shaman Nettie Two Horses that I hope to see). They all have a role to play in the investigation and in dealing with the deadly perpetrator.
Another reviewer complained that the Big Bad is taken out off-stage, but missing the "cleanup" didn't bother me, since the Big Bad's MAGIC is defeated in a tense and exciting scene, and that's the key.
One potential story element which I belatedly realized we never actually saw or even heard about is what the family, and the rest of their coven, did on Yule. The attempted wickedness was prevented in time, so hopefully crime-scene rules wouldn't have forced them to forego their sacred rituals, yet we aren't told even about any Wiccan gathering, just the cozy family Christmas gifting a couple days later. Maybe EW didn't want to introduce a bunch more characters, or offend any real Wiccans with either wrong details or revealed secrets?? Don't get me wrong, I love this story, as I do many other heart-warming holiday tales and extras, but the cultural contact is supposed to be part of the interest this time, so it's an omission.
There are some touching bits, like Benedict consulting with Rule re. what clothes to wear to send the right message, and his loving respect for both Arjenie's knowledge and sense. Arjenie knows that Benedict will *expect* her to come after him with backup when he chases the bear, not to merely stay back, safe, as he might *wish*. There are also some clever observations, like, "The tendency to talk even if you had nothing to contribute was not an essentially human trait ... Give most species speech, and they wanted to use it." (loc. 310±)
I'll admit that there were more typos and errors than there should have been, but not enough to impair my enjoyment or knock off a star. I always say that I should pass on my notes to the author, but rarely do it, so I'll note the more significant ones here. Skimming through my corrections, I count 5 other (minor) goofs and two iffy wordings.
• There's one external inconsistency in the "2 weeks later" epilogue of Blood Challenge (the book where B & A meet & bond) it mentions B already visiting his new Chosen's family — but the Humans First rally battles mentioned in Human Error occur in October, in the *next* book, Death Magic, and HE is obviously set in December. I guess EW wishes she'd never put in that passing mention, once she thought of this story idea — or maybe she even forgot that she had made it. 😕
• Another reviewer pointed out an internal inconsistency I'd missed, being bad at names and still learning them (since there are a bunch of family to meet that early in the book!) the person with the disturbing dream caused by a weak precognitive Gift is Uncle Nate in several mentions up through location 339, then at loc. 343 and later, it has become Uncle Ambrose.
• Little Jack Russell terrier Havoc is female, and while there's a portion of the book where things are ambiguous (I'm keeping this vague and spoiler-free; trust me, you'll enjoy what happens), it's in the end (loc. 1763) that one paragraph twice uses a male pronoun.
I do wish the cover model were properly Navajo, or at least part-Native, instead of a bearded Caucasian, but cover art ... What can you do? At least it's professional caliber.
N.b., an excerpt from Mind Magic begins at 91%.
